Train from Lyon to Paris

Is the TGV the only train from Lyon to Paris. Is there not a less expensive local train?

Only the TGV is available on this route. If you book ahead via the SNCF web site you can get one-way fares for as little as 32 Euros. www.voyages-sncf.com Make sure you tell the website you are collecting your tickets in France.

If you book far enough ahead (up to three months allowed), you can get a PREM'S (discount) fare of €22. Leave France as the default country, do NOT choose cancellation insurance, and print your own ticket.

The night trains that are RE, not TGV. Or take the RE to Dijon (via Beaune) and then in to Paris. Between 5 and 6 hours.

I don't know that this saves you money (compared to which fare?). But there are alternatives to the fast trains.

21h46 (Perrache) 22h00 (Part Dieu) train is only 32E. Downside: you arrive in Paris at midnight.

Tom,

Go to www.voyages-sncf.com. Click on the British flag in the lower left-hand corner. Enter a morning departure time and you'll get about a two-hour range of timetables with fares. On the left-hand side of the page change the departure time to about two hours later and you'll get a new two-hour range. Keep doing that until you've gone through your choices for the entire day.

Tom -

Going a completely different route - Air France does fly from Lyon to Paris

Depending upon when you are traveling it could be an option as well.

Typically this flight arrives into Orly airport. The flight is about 1 hour.

It is an option to consider. www.sidestep.com

Just to be clear and reiterate what others have said, you can get such a ticket for €22 if you book a month or so in advance. There are no conditions on the discount, but you will get absolutely no refunds or exchanges. Think of it as the rail equivalent of a plane ticket, and you're great.
