First let me say I am a 1st time traveler to Germany. Despite that I have been asked to arrange a trip thru my organization that includes a week in Germany and a week in Vienna. I need to figure out the best way to get a group for Halle Germany to Vienna by train. I saw something on Ricks site about 2 for 1 fares. Please Help
There are three towns named Halle in Germany. Which one? I don't know about 2 for 1 fares, but the Bahn has advance purchase, train specific, non-refundable tickets (like airline tickets) from any place in Germany to a town outside of Germany for €29 and up. Look them up on the German Rail (Bahn) website. This is for tickets bought 3 to 92 days in advance, but the cheapest one sell out quickly. Generally, at least one of the trains must be an express train (IC/EC/ICE) and the last train must start in Germany. You can use any other trains, including regional ones, to get to the departure point of the express train. I can see an all ICE connection leaving Halle (Saale) at 10:00 at 10 May with one connection in Nuernberg for €39.
THANKS... that's really helpful. and yes. I was inquiring about Halle Salle
I've only had one trip to Germany where we used train travel and it worked quite well but just a FYI. We were traveling on trains on the weekends and on Sunday afternoon/evening especially, they were VERY full. From Wuerzburg to Frankfurt, we were crunched into a tiny space by the door, sitting on the floor with luggage and the other Sunday was just about as bad...in other words, no seats were available. Anyway, if you are traveling on a weekend and especially if it is a Sunday, get a reserved seat if possible. We were traveling in March so during vacation season it could be even worse although I'm not sure how...the train wouldn't hold many more people.
