Hello,
I will be traveling to Switzerland in March to see the Italy v Brazil soccer match. After the match, I want to train from Geneva to Zurich where I will be staying the remainder of my trip and fly home from. What is the best train to take? How long will it take? And how many US dollars will it cost? All suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
Check schedules and fares at the Swiss Rail site: rail.ch It's a 2.5 hour direct journey (there are additional connections via Bern). The last train out of Geneva is at 10pm, but Swiss Rail often has special late-night trains after big events like this to get people home. But to avoid the stress I would stay overnight in Geneva and head to Zurich the next morning.
Lenny, As mentioned in the previous reply, the shortest time on that route is 2H:43M via direct train. However, the time will vary depending on which train you choose. There appear to also be night trains on that route, with travel times exceeding 7 hours. Those usually have changes and layovers, sometimes at dreadful times in the "wee hours" of the morning, so taking a day train would be far preferable! The current fares are as low as CHF 42.00, which is currently about US$ 46.25 (the actual cost will depend on the exchange rates at the time). Happy travels!
That "current low fare" of 42 CHF is the half-price fare. You have to buy a Half-Fare Card for 110 CHF to get it. Regular fare with out it is 84 CHF (actually I see prices of 44/88 for March travel). The website is tricky because it shows the half-fares as the default option.
Thank you all sooooo much for your feedback!! Much appreciated!!
