Looking at the DB Bahn website, upon international flight arrival at FRA, which train station would depart from the airport to Baden Baden?
One factor on how fast you can get to the Fernbahnhof is on which airline you are arriving and to what terminal. Terminal 1, used by Lufthansa and affiliated airlines is adjacent to the stations. If you have to come from T2, it will take a little longer. I have flown into T1 and gone to the Fernbahnhof three times. I don't think it's taken longer then an hour, except the first time, 2000, when I didn't know where I was going. It helps a little that I am carrying on and don't have to wait at baggage retrieval, but customs have always been a formality.
Dale, I was going to suggest using the Fernbahnhof and the faster train, precisely for the reasons you mentioned. After a 10+ hour international flight, there's no way I'm in the mood for slower regional trains with multiple changes. As Lee mentioned in his usual excellent reply, access to the Ferhnbahnhof requires a short walk, an escalator up and then down to the station platform. There are some small snack bars on the way across the walkway to the station, so you can grab a coffee or a sandwich for the train. There's a ticket office there (one floor up from the tracks but my memory is a bit "foggy" on that), which has both Kiosks and staffed ticket windows. On my last trip through there, a helpful Attendant assisted me with the Kiosks, which at the time was MUCH faster than waiting in a queue! Where are you staying in Baden-Baden? The station is a bit of a hike from the main part of town, so a Taxi would be a really good idea. Part of the town is a "restricted traffic area" so only commercial or emergency vehicles can enter. Happy travels!
It's you option. There are direct and one stop ICE connections from the Fernbahnhof to Baden-Baden in about an hour and a half for €43 for one person. On the other hand, you can take the S-Bahn from the Regionalbhf to Mainz, then a regional train to Karlsruhe, and another regional train or an S-Bahn to Baden-Baden, a three hour trip for €30 for one person. Do you want to save money, or time? The Regionalbhf is under the building across the street from Terminal 1 and accessible from escalators in the departure hall of T1. The Fernbahnhof is farther out, on the other side of that building across the street and accessible from a pedestrian bridge from the 2nd floor mezzanine in T1. It takes a little longer to get to, but not bad. The prices above are for one person. For two, from the Fernbahnhof, just double the €43 fare, €86. From the Regionalbhf, it's 2x€3,90 to Mainz, €24 for the Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket for two to Karlsruhe, and 2x€5,50 for the KVV ticket to Baden-Baden, €42,80.
Thanks for the quick reply, Lee. In this case, time and convenience outweigh price tag. Having flown 10+ hours we will be interested in getting to Baden Baden as soon as possible. Arrive in FRA at 12:50pm. How much time would you allow to go through customs/immigration and comfortably get to train station?
No need for a taxi. The buses are right outside the front door of the Bahnhof, to the right. A lot of the buses go out, is it Langestr., to Hindenburgplatz and Leopoldplatz, and that pedestrianstreet Ken talked about. I took a Stadtbus, can't remember the number, 201, 204, 205? Got off at Hindenburgplatz, found a cybercafe, then walked the length of the pedestrian street, kind of a Rodeo Drive for walking. The Stadtbuses are low 200 numbers. Ask one of the drivers if he goes near your address. You can find bus connections at www.kvv.de. There is an interactive map on the B-B website at www.baden-baden.de.
