We are thinking of using our rail pass to take the regional trains from Avignon to Port Bou then Port Bou to Barcelona. We cannot reserve seats on the regional trains and are traveling in July as a family of four. Has anyone done this before in the summer? Is it hard to get on the trains (because they are full)? Is there a chance we will have to stand? I know we can reserve on other routes, but the departure times are not great for these routes and it is costly to reserve for a family of four. Thanks, Karen

I haven't traveled that route, so I don't know if those trains are likely to be full in July. However, you will make more than 20 stops on each leg. Surely people will be getting off at some of those stops. If the train is full when you leave Avignon, you should be able to grab seats a little way down the line. The same for when you get on the second train at Port Bou.
