I'd like to use my Eurail pass to travel from Amsterdam to Vienna. Is it best to wait until I land in Msterdam in mid-June, or should I reserve a seat ahead of time?
Without even getting into the specifics of whether or not a Eurail pass is worth your money, just so you're aware... Amsterdam to Vienna is a 12 hour train ride during the day and 15+ hours at night with a few transfers. And that doesn't even account for the time it takes you to reach Centraal Station in Amsterdam and move from the Vienna Hauptbahnhof to your hotel. But to answer your question more specifically... it depends on what time you leave and what combination of trains you take. Please provide more information.
It's a long way and no reason to put off planning something that BIG until the last minute. Can you stop somewhere along the way? Break up the trip a bit? maybe spend the night in Nurnberg - the train station is right outside the old town walls and we stayed in a cheap place and the castle is beautiful all lit up at night ... even with just one stop it is a looong trip! Regarding reservations - hard to say whether you will need them - I don't think they are mandatory on any leg.
Hi, If you time your departures correctly, both day and night train, you only transfer once from Amsterdam-Vienna. I would do it this way (day): Amsterdam-Frankfurt direct on the ICE, then Frankfurt-Vienna direct on the ICE. On the CNL night train: Amsterdam-Munich, then Munich-Vienna direct on the Rail Jet (RJ). Using a Rail Pass (day) both those legs on the ICE require no reservation. The CNL leg has a mandatory reservation requirement, no mandatory reservation on the RJ leg. I would only get the Pass if you intend on doing a number of long rides esp in Germany and criss cross traveling. To avoid the expensive mandatory reservations, don't take the Belgian Thalys trains, even with your Pass.
Hi, Something to add to my above comments: Both day and night options require only one change of trains, Frankfurt Hbf. and Munich Hbf., repectively. You'll arrive at Westbahnhof in Vienna, ie., Wien Westbahnhof, a newly enlarged station. well served by numerous tram lines as well as two U-Bahn lines. I stay Westbahnhof, less than 4 mins walk to the station, saves time when departing. If you're going on a week-end on the CNL night train, I would reserve ahead of time. Night trains do sell out, the greater the chance on a week-end in the summer. The Pass gives you the option of going either 1st or 2nd class (day).
Thanks for the replies & helpful hints. I appreciate it!
