Hello My husband and I are planning a trip to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Cesky Kromlov, VIenna, Mauthausen, Salzurg and Berchtasgade in Aug. travelling mostly by train. I was wondering if renting a car would be a good option especailly going to Cesky or Mauthausen? Any other train/car ideas Thanks
Friends of mine spent about a week on the road between Salzburg and Vienna and loved it. Aside from that, probably not - the very high drop-off fees between countries is a major deterrent.
Renting a car will cost you a lot more money and for most of the trip, trains go where you want to go. There are a lot of buses from Prague to Cesky Krumlov. There is also a train. The train costs about $15 (11,50€) per person one way. From Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, the fastest way is by bus (RVO 840) from the Salzburg Hbf (with stops in Salzburg), for about 5€/person OW. The train via Freilassing takes a little longer and cost twice as much, but if you are also going from Berchtesgaden to Munich that night, a Bayern-Ticket for 26€ (2 P) covers both Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and Berchtesgaden to Munich.
We always rent a car when traveling in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. We like having the opportunity to stop when and where we want as there are so many special little towns along the way. However, we seldom travel into big cities such as Berlin but have no problem in places such as Salzburg or Berchtesgaden.
