I'm thinking of traveling between Garmisch, Germany and Brussels, Belgium by train in the next few weeks. Has anyone made that trip before? Is it scenic? Or should I just take the train from Garmisch to Munich and fly to Brussels and spend my sightseeing time there?
WE TOOK A HIGH SPEED TRAIN FROM AMSTERDAM ACROSS GERMANY. IT WAS LOVELY BUT IT IS A LONG TRIP. LOOK AT THE DEUTCHE BAHN WEB SITE FOR ALL GOOD INFO.
With the time you'll need to allow for airport check-in, security, and luggage retrieval, you'll only save a few hours by flying--and it will be more expensive than taking the train all the way.
According to www.bahn.de, you can leave Garmisch at 08:04 and be in Bruxelles at 17:01, changing trains at Munich and at Frankfurt Flughafen (airport). You can book the whole route in one shot (€140) on the DB site. Or you can book each leg separately in order to get a Dauer-Spezial fare as low as €29, if available, for the Munich-Frankfurt leg, thus saving yourself a few euros. Go to the site and enter Garmisch-Partenkirchen as your departure point and Bruxelles-Midi as your arrival point. After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.
