What pray tell should we do other than chaining our luggage to us and sleeping in the station until the city comes alive? We will be traveling on the night train from Venice, thanks so much for your help
I thought about this when you said you wanted to go from Venice to Salzburg on a night train. Apparently that is a Venice to Vienna night train, scheduled to leave Venice late evening and get to Vienna for breakfast. 4 o'clock in Salzburg is what you get. There is also a CNL night train to Munich, leaving Venice at 22:51, changing at 5:30 at Kufstein to a RailJet, and arriving in Salzburg just before 7 AM. You might consider rearranging your schedule a bit, going from Venice to Munich and making a side trip later from Munich to Salzburg. Today there are also day trains that make the trip, Venice to Salzburg or Venice to Munich fast enough that night trains are no longer so attractive.
We will actually be spending that night and 2 more in Munich so maybe I should look at going directly into Munich and making the switch. We could probably get a bit more sleep rather than just hanging around the Salzburg train station for a few hours
That CNL train gets to Munich at 6:30 - not much better. But considering the reconstruction work going on in Salzburg Hbf, maybe a little more workable.
Just took another look at options and wondering if we arent better off taking a scenic train to innsbruck spending a night withe folowing morning on to Garmisch and then Munich??? Thank you for your insight!!
That "scenic train" continues on to Munich along the Inn river via Kufstein and Rosenheim. The alternate, Garmisch route is over the mountains via Seefeld to Mittenwald and, althought slower, would be worth traveling. If you buy an Austrian Rail ticket in Innsbruck to Mittenwald it will cost about €10 per person. Get off in Mittenwald to see it and buy a hop on/off Bayern-Ticket for €29, at an automat. That will allow you to stop and spend time in Garmisch. If you wanted to, you could proceed from Garmisch to Oberammergau on the bus and continue from Oberammergau to Munich by train, all with the same ticket.
