My family and I will be driving from Genoa, Italy towards Beaune, France and were planning to have a layover somewhere in the Piedmont region of Italy. Can anyone recommend any towns that we should consider stopping in and / or staying for the night?
I am also interested! We are driving from Monterossa el Mare to Chamonix. We are thinking of a night in Milan but will entertain better sugestions. Direct to Chamonix is 4 hours so a layover is not strictly needed. We want to see a bit more of Italy and have ruled out driving up to Cervinia to see the Matterhorn from the Italian side. Ideas?
Hi Brian. The only area of Piemonte that I am familiar with (and love) is the Langhe region which is around the town of Alba and south of Alba. Beautiful hills of vineyards, great food and wine. However that would not be very far along on your travels from Genoa to Beaune. If you are only staying one night between Genoa and Beaune you might want to go farther. Maybe Torino.
We enjoyed the Val d'Aosta region during our 2 day stay in Aosta. It is not far from Chamonix so very similar views of the Alps. A number of castles in the area and the Gran Paradiso National Park has some nice views. It may take more time than you would be willing to allow but something to consider.
