Can anyone recommend a good tour to Normandy? We will be in Paris and plan on taking the train to Bayeux. Thanks
Kathy, Could you elaborate a bit? Are you looking for a day tour of the D-Day beaches, originating in Bayeux? Are you planning to spend at least one night in Bayeux? I have some possibilities in mind, but need a bit more information. Cheers!
It was report earlier on this site that Battlebus had gone out of business. Part of the problem with doing a day tour from Paris is the distances DDay beaches stretch from east to west over 50 miles and the distance from Paris. You could do some some highlights in a days time but it would be quick hit.
kathy, Some additional information to add concerning the tours that the others mentioned. In the past, BattleBus was the most highly recommend tour operator for the D-Day sites. However, they have ceased operation but are still providing tours under a different name. Three options you could consider: > D-Day Historian (operated by Paul & Myriam, who were the owners of BattleBus) > Dale Booth (previously one of the BattleBus Guides - he was formerly in the British Army and is an exceptional Guide!) > Ellwood von Seibold (I haven't yet taken his tours, but have heard that they're excellent) Good luck with your planning!
We took a Battlebus tour two months ago and the cost was 85 euro for a one-day trip. The prices for the three options Ken mentioned are considerably more than that. You might want to look around for some other alternatives.
The WWII museum in Caen also offers a day long tour that can pick you up at the train station. The tour in May 2009 included Omaha Beach, American cemetary, German bunkers, Point du Huc & the museum itself. The tour was very informative & well done. I especially thought the 30 minute film at the Caen museum was extremely well done.
I would also recommend DDay Historian(formerly BattleBus). We took the all day (9 hours) American Tour and really enjoyed it and saw so much. It appears they have changed the tours quite a bit. http://www.ddayhistorian.com/ I would love to take the Band of Brothers Tour.
Just FYI avoid Normandy like the plague the second week of April, 2011. There's a Boy Scout world camporee there with literally thousands of boy scouts going there.
We would be taking the train to Bayeaux in the Am and would like to tour in the afternoon.Thank you
The museum in Caen will provide you an afternoon mini-van tour (max 6 pers). I have taken it and it's the greatest! http://www.memorial-caen.fr/portail/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=798&Itemid=1528
Battlebus out of business!! That's a shocker. Good to know some of them are still offering tours. I can vouch for Dale as an excellent tour guide. He was amazing on our Battlebus tour.
Janis, In one sense, BattleBus is not really "out of business" but simply operating under a different name and a different format, but with the same owners. Dale is now operating his own tour business, and I'm sure he's still providing the same excellent tours. Cheers!
Neko - you scared me for a moment with your mention of the Boy Scout Camporee - my husband and I are going to be in Normandy from April 9-12th! But I checked the dates and the camporee is from April 15-17...it said scouts can arrive on the 14th - so I think we will be okay:) Thanks for the info:) And Kathy, enjoy your tour and if you get back before April, please let us know what you decided to do and how it all turned out!
You can find all of Dale Booth information at www.daleboothnormandytours.com He will also be working for Rick Steves tours this year in France leading the D Day tours in Normandy. Dale can pick up and collect from Bayeux or the next station along the line which is closer i.e. Carentan
