There are MANY hostels in the Middle Rhine Valley - probably the part you want to see. Look into Bingen, Kaub, Bacharach, St. Goar, and Oberwesel at THIS PAGE. St Goar's hostel is on the cliffside below Rheinfels Castle - a wonderful view from the hostel - and is the least expensive. Bacharach's hostel is in a castle but it's very high on the cliffs (about 500 stair steps from town!) The Kaub and Bingen hostels are newly renovated and very nice - both are easy to reach on foot. The Oberwesel hostel is very high on the cliffside and hard to reach on foot. Expect to share the hostels with groups of noisy school kids. If you want a larger city, try Mainz or Koblenz; you'll find hostels there at the above page. Instead of hostels, you might prefer to stay in an inexpensive B&B like Irmgard Orth's home in Bacharach. Her sister Ursula on the same street also has her own B&B. You can get around the area by train on a daypass (22€ for 1 person, 26€ for tww.) Details are HERE. Buena suerte!
