tours from Munich to Neuschwanstein

Staying in Munich for a few days in September. Can anyone recommend a tour to Neuschwanstein?

I wouldn't travel all that distance and back for the 45-min tour of N'stein alone, and I certainly wouldn't pay a tour company to take me there just for this tour. The interior and the tour (in marginally intelligible English) of this "castle" (really just an elaborate late 19th-century home where nothing ever happened) do not justify the time or expense. If the Hohenschwangau Palace, the town of Füssen, or Schwangau, or an area hike interests you, then your trip is probably a more sound idea. Neuschwanstein is at least very cool to look at from outside. You can look for a tour that includes Linderhof as well, perhaps, if you're interested in that. But it's also pretty simple to reach the area by public transport and to visit Füssen and Schwangau on your own. I agree with Russ. The tours are just a scheme to get your money. You can easily travel to Neuschwanstein on you own using a €29 Bayern-Ticket (for up to five people). The tour of the castle is only given by guides who work there, so the tour doesn't offer anything in the castle. See my webpage for details about getting to the castles.

Linda,
My wife and I took the advise of Russ and Lee amoung others and did it ourselves. So much more enjoyable to take your time. Do your research and you will enjoy the experience much more. We actually stayed in Fussen and biked to the castles. It was a splendid day and we beat most of the tour buses.

Thank you so much for the great advice, I think we will try it ourselves.
