Has anyone toured either of these two Chateaus'? Chateau Fontaine Henry or Chateau de Brecy? They are located near Bayeux where we will be staying for 5 nights and just wondered how you liked touring them. We will have a rental car for 2 days the first week in April and thought it might be fun to see a Chateau in this area.
Thanks so much for your reply! Sharon
Hi Sharon, We've been to Chateau Fontaine Henry twice. Once during the day, and once for a night tour by candlelight. We really enjoyed it. Haven't been to Chateau de Brecy but we did also go to Chateau Balleroy, once owned by Malcom Forbes where he and Elizabeth Taylor would sometimes stay. We liked that one too.
We went to Chateau de Brecy in July 2012. It has an exceptionally good medium-sized garden, with formal tiers and excellent informal flower plot sections among those tiers. At one corner, there is a splendid village church (... inside the same gardens) with a sweet historic interior. As far as we could tell, the interior of any residences here are NOT open to the public. (The garden has one nice public toilet.) Don't fail to peek in the left free-standing cylindrical tool shed (if unlocked). The walls have been hand decorated (modern times, I think) with hundreds of real scallop and mussel shells in wet plaster. We went specifically for the garden, and were VERY GLAD we did. It was a bit out of the way, but a pleasant drive, and a very uncrowded visit. But weather and blooming seasons could affect your own experience. The "park" grounds beyond the garden were seen only through the locked gate. I made a note to consider also de Canon, ... de Harcourt, ... de Vendeuvre, but we didn't have time even to research them. There are a LOT of gardens in Normandy.
Thank-you Susan and Tim for your replies! Very helpful. Sharon
Have a great trip Sharon!
Trip is not til the first of April Susan. You have been such a great help to me. We had Colton, our grandson over the other night to finish our plans. We are all really excited. I will write you when we get back. Thanks, Sharon
