After reading many glowing reports on the bernina express i am considering changing my travel plan for next may. Can anyone advise on how driving a similar route compares with the train?

I recommend the train...they are clean, super on time and go everywhere you need and some places without vehicular access. Plus, you can check luggage on the trains to avoid carrying things around. And you avoid high petrol & rental prices (Switzerland is probably the priciest place in Europe), and stressing about parking in strange cities.
You may want to invest in a Swiss Pass (or whatever it's called), as that will allow you passage on most trains, discounts on many private railways, and is more cost efficient in many cases than separate rail tickets. There is good info on such passes on this website.
