Tour or on our own to Salzburg and Prague

Our home base will be Vienna for 4 days. Should we do a tour or try to figure out the logistics of train schedules from Vienna to Salzburg and then Vienna to Prague and what sights to see once we're there. The tours Avg. $150pp for the day. The trains don't really seem that cheap to me either though. This is our first trip to Europe. What do you think? Thanks

Have you been to Vienna before? You can easily fill four days in Vienna and just stay in Vienna. I agree that Prague is harder to do on your own and I met someone who did the Prague day tour. But her trip back to Vienna was terrible as they got caught in ones of those baaad traffic jams for several hours. I would look at going to Salzburg by train. It's not a bad trip. Sites in Vienna include the cathedral, the fortress, the other churches, the Mirabeau palace and gardens, Mozarts house near Mirabeau and the Geburtz Haus. Old graveyards with metal grave markers. Also, just wandering the city. You'll cab it or bus it from the train station. Prague is a big city with several museums, the castle, lots of beautiful churches, different squares, towers to climb, and lots of good beer to drink. In the summer it will be hot.

You might want to save Prague for a future trip. It is quite a trek from Vienna.

Make sure you go to Schloss Schonbrunn in Vienna! One of my favourite places:)
