Tour de France

We arrive in Paris the evening before the last day of the Tour. For those who have been in Paris at this time do you recommend

A. getting out of Paris (Versailles?)

or

B. sticking around

If you choose B where would you suggest we go to watch?

Also, any insight on crowd size, what other things should we attempt to do, etc is most welcome. We only have a total of three days in Paris and would like to make the most of it. Thank you!

I can't tell you which to do but there's no reason to leave Paris if you don't want to watch the finish. It only affects the Champs Elysees and the road around the Tuilleries Garden. Anywhere else you won't even know they're there. We watched the finish in 2001 and it was really fun for us because we are very into the Tour. If you want to watch, anywhere along the Champs Elysees, rue de Rivoli or above rue de Rivoli in the Tuilleries Garden is the best I think. You have to get there hours early to get a good spot where you can actually see them. They go around 10 times which is nice because they go by very fast. Whatever you chose to do, have fun!

Thank you, Susan! My husband spoke to friend yesterday that said almost the same thing. I think it would add to the excitement of Paris to be able to see part of the race. I appreciate you taking the time to respond!

I have been there twice during the race,, both times I was not aware of it really,, I mean , I knew it was going on somewhere, but it did not affect me . Obviously there are some streets closed to traffic, and the Champs will be crowded, but just go to other places

I am a big fan.... I suggest you see it. If you want to be right up against the barrier you need to get there around 11 if it's not that big of a deal to you then later. The maximum fill is like 5 people between you and the rail if you squeeze in. The excitement starts in the afternoon when the caravan comes into town. The best side I think is the side opposite the podium (less crowded) it's the side near the Arc de Triumph. The racers turn around to head back up the Champs Elysee here to make another circuit. Get off at Charles de Gaulle Etoile exit from the metro. You can't miss it. They go around several times so right here on the Champs Elysee is the place to be. Have fun and thank Lance for all the great years for me. (hopefully he will be wearing yellow)

Kristen, it's good theater if nothing else. It will involve several hours of waiting around, and then for each of the eight laps around Champs-Élysées the riders will whiz by for about ten seconds and then more waiting ensues. If you don't have young kids to worry about it's fine. Don't anticipate being able to sit down. And this is key...have plenty of water on your person.

Thank you all for your advice! We've decided we definately will make a point of seeing at least part of the race. We've been watching it a little on TV so hopefully that will add to the fun of it. I'll certainly give a cheer or two for Lance - we'd love to see him win it again.

Thanks to all for taking the time to respond!
