Toulon

Toulon is one of our stops on a Med Cruise....have heard bad things about this port on Cruise Critic...most say to stay on the ship .....you won't miss much.....we were hoping to see Monaco.....but I don't think that'll happen.....Any Suggestions?

I agree with Bets. Take the train to Cassis.

Seconding Cassis. I've been twice now and I'm in love with it. It's just stunning. If you have time, take a boat trip to the Calenques when you're there - otherwise walking the beach and having dinner on the harbor are perfectly acceptable too.

The seedy reputation for Toulon is old news. I have been there recently, and loved it. The street market, the cafes on the watefront, and the cheap ferry across the bay are all great. If you have time and transportation, the castle ruins at Gremond are cool, as are the town surrounding.

Randall, thank you for the post about Toulon. My wife and I have a friend who lives there and we are visiting Toulon early in February, and finding anything in guide books about Toulon is difficult and what is written about the city is negative. Beyond the market what are your suggestions to see in and around the city? Thank you.

Hoot, I recommend taking the walk-on ferry across the bay... sorry but I don't remember the name of the village on the other side. There are shops there, and it is a great place to go for a walk.
