Hi. I recently found very cheap tickets to Brussels this fall and was wondering if anyone had any "must see" sites in Belgium besides Brussels and Bruges. Also, we were wondering if anyone had been to Luxembourg and/or Maastricht, Netherlands and if you'd recommend them. We are young, but not into the night scene. Thanks!!!
If you are interested in WW1 things then the area surrounding Ieper/Ypres is full of trenches and cemeteries, memorial etc. The very well done "In Flanders Fields" Museum is in the center of Ieper. This whole area was a major battle front for the war. I am not a war buff -- but found it all very interesting.
And if you are a WWII history buff, the town of Bastogne (Battle of the Bulge) is very interesting, with a very good museum & monument.
I liked Ghent (it's home to the Ghent Altarpiece by Jan van Eyck in Sint-Baafskirk and there's a castle you can tour) and Tongeren (one of Belgium's 2 oldest cities, it has Roman ruins and is a pretty town). Tournai, Belgium's other oldest city, is also a cool place, with some Roman ruins of its own and the huge cathedral.
I was in Luxembourg just for a couple of days and if you go to Luxembourg City, you can see most things in a day - the casemates, cathedral, Museum of Modern Art (for art-lovers). Unless you want to go hiking, I think Luxembourg City is the best place to go, although it only takes 1 hour to cross the whole country.
I'll be honest didn't love what I saw of Belgium (Brussels and Bruge), but Paris is only a 2 hour train ride away, and if you book in advance you can get a good price
I like Antwerp and Ostende. Have not been to Ghent yet, but would like to.
I also quite enjoy strolling around Brussels, but have to admit I have never been to this famous square that everyone wants to see. This may be a big tourist site, but I guess I kind of shy away from stuff like that. Things that attract me are neighborhoods, street festivals, ethnic markets, Art Deco architecture, antique markets, cubby hole stores, old churches tucked away in a corner somewhere, nice little cafes next to parks, botanical gardens, and well, that sort of thing.
I too like Antwerp. Ghent is appealling but when we were there (May) there was lots of construction.
If you've not been to Amsterdam, you should include it.
I did not care for Ghent maybe cuz we were staying in Brugge. 5 nights was very nice for us in Brugge.
I prefer Ghent over Brugge, but this is from the perspective of someone who's been to both multiple times. The Graslei is one of the most beautiful streets in Europe, in my opinion.
There's a great open air folk museum at Domein Bokrijk near the city of Genk, although if you don't have a car, it's a little difficult to reach.
If you're looking for a rather restrained but enjoyable night scene (and the university is in session), grab a beer at one of the cafes on the Oude Markt in Leuven. The late gothic stadhuis of this city is also pretty impressive, although not worth touring on the inside.
Maastricht is a pleasant city with a nice pedestrian shopping area, but I can't think of any overwhelming reason to go out of your way for a visit.
Thanks everyone! I think we're going to see Ghent as well. Thanks for all your input! Any more would be greatly appreciated.
