Too much to do - Vienna, Prague, Salzburg, Munich, help us choose!

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Europe in the first half of October. As we've gotten further into the planning, I am forced to accept that we are trying to do too much, and something needs to be eliminated.

We have a total of 10 full days in Europe. We wish to visit:

Munich/Bavaria (including Melk)
Salzburg & nearby villages (Halsdatt)
Vienna
Prague

We were thinking of cutting Vienna, but as I explore the travel options from Prague to Munich and the time involved, I'm beginning to think that Prague may have to wait for a different time for a visit, as Vienna just fits better geographically....This saddens me as I REALLY would like to experience Prague..
Does anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions as to what should be cut or how to make this happen? Munich has to stay.. that's the BF's first choice..
I also don't want to try to visit so many places that we don't have enough time to truly enjoy them..
THANKS!

Personally I would choose Prague over Vienna, especially if you are going to Salzburg.

Fly to Prague. Two nights in Prague. Overnight train to Salzburg. One night in Salzburg. One night in Hallstatt. Train to Munich. Two nights in Munich/Melk. Train to Augsburg. Rent a car. Drive the "Romantic Road", stopping in Nordlingen, Dinkelsbuhl and Rothenberg. One night in Rothenburg. Train to Munich or Frankfurt. Fly home from Munich or Frankfurt.

That may require 11 days instead of 10, but you can probably tweak it to make it work for you. Prague is an amazing city. I would definately choose Praguge over Vienna.

Good luck!

My wife and I just returned from a Prague-Vienna vacation. We had ten days too. Though we would have liked to stay longer, we were able to do both towns, as well as some additional side trips, including the town and Benedictine monastery of Melk which is an hour west of Vienna and well worth the trip. We did not visit Munich this time, but I think you could fit it in.

Munich's Oktoberfest will be happening when you want to go. So, your choice might come down to whether or not you can find somewhere to stay. Some earlier discussions about accommodations during that time might help out. Check it out. What city are you flying into and out of? Do you plan on travelling by train or driving?

I'd agree with most of what Lennon suggested, but I'd do two nights in Salzburg and do Hallstatt as a day trip from there. Hallstatt is pretty, but aside from the salt mine tour, there's not that much to do compared to Salzburg. I can't help you decide between Prague and Vienna because I love them both.

Thanks everyone for your tips. Oktoberfest is over the 1st weekend in Oct, I believe? We wouldn't be in Munich until later in the month, so to miss it. We are thinking of flying into Prague, and ending in Munich, flying home from there. We are thinking of maybe renting a car in Prague - driving to Salzburg, stopping in Cesky krumlov.. would that work?
