I am mapping out our trip to Germany for October and one of the maps I was looking at indicated that the A5 autobahn from Frankfurt to Wurzburg was a toll road. It been 30 years since I drove that road but it wasn't then. Does anyone know if it's a toll road now. Will I need Euro coins for that right away?
Michelin recommend the A3 for travel from Frankfurt to Wuerzburg (95 of the 115 km). There are no tolls. I recommend the train. There are fares but no tolls. The A5 doesn't go from Frankfurt to Wuerzburg. It does go through Frankfurt, but from there is goes north to central Hessen, and there are no tolls there (ViaMichelin). I really don't think there are tolls on the autobahn.
Haven't even left yet and I'm lost already! Thanks for the toll info:) and the correct road number.

Only a tunnel near Erfurt and other one in an expressway in Hamburg are tolled in Germany within the fast roads network. Other than that, only Alpine mountain road will, sometimes, have tolls.
Oh, and I think the reason Mary's map indicated that the A5 is a toll road is that all German autobahns (and a few federal roads) are toll roads for trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating over twelve metric tons. Irrelevant for tourists, but a map maker has to take truckers into account too...
No tolls, as others have stated. But know that it is a heavily travelled, multi-lane freeway with plenty of truck traffic. With road construction adding to the mix, i might recommend avoiding it during rush hour, if possible (I last drove it at 5 p.m. during a heavy rainstorm, and it wasn't much fun, but not horrible) . P.S. If you make the trip during the day, look to the north as you approach Wurzburg area .... you can see vineyards on the hillsides - very pretty.
