My husband and I will be visiting Toledo Spain and would like to visit a damascus steel workshop, is there anything like this or similar to visit?
Penny, From what little I know about this I would say that most, if not all, damascus steel made in Toledo is for the tourist trade. It might be that you best bet would be to go to Toledo and begin asking around there. Some touristy supposed damascus is just etched steel rather than forged. In my opinion some of the best forged damascus steel is made here in the U.S. today.
Thank you for the reply!
Penny, Tonight Rick Steves, the boy from Edmonds was on PBS and a short part of the show was about Toledo. There was a passing shot of a shop window full of swords and knives. As you know there is a kinship among knifemakers. I'll bet if you spent three or four days in Toledo you could find your way to the smithies by asking around. In my experience knifemakers are completely selfless about sharing their time with each other.
My husband and I visited Toledo last year and bought some swords. I know from speaking to the shop keepers that there is a Marto workshop in the province of Toledo, but its not in the city of Toledo, its in Olias del Rey.
Hope this helps.
