I would like to shop for kitchen knives in Toledo. Do you have any suggestions for a good manufacturer? (Name, address)
Many years ago I bought some steak knives from Mariano Zamorano. He is a sword/knife maker in the historic part of Toledo. A quick internet search shows that he's still in business. Here is his website: http://www.marianozamorano.com/english/Empresa.htm You may want to e-mail him to determine what types of kitchen knives he carries (and if he still makes them)since his website is devoted to his swords. I ended up buying the steak knives because my wife was with me went I visited. I saw the swords and daggers and wanted one. She reminded me that we didn't need a sword or a dagger, but did need steak knives. I've had them since 2003 and they work great. Good luck.
Thanks Rob! Those darn wives...always so practical!
I also bought steak knives from this man, spent more than an hour tracking him down, as the locals who sell them at retail were reluctant to give directions to his establishment. Get to Toledo early as they close for most of the mid-day. Spent so much time looking for him that we missed the El Grecco museum! PS. I cleaned him out that day, buying six sets of steak knives as gifts for my kids, and 6 years later, they're all still sharp and beautiful, although heavy in the luggage!
There is an excellent knife shop across the street from the back side of St. Tome Church. I have purchased from him on several times. Small store and well stocked. Caution: On one trip I purchased three sets of kitchen knives - personal use, wedding presents, etc. I carried them in my suitcase on the train and no question whatsoever. On the next trip I purchased ONE knife and almost was not admitted to the train! The inspector said it had to be in a sealed container, and the suitcase was not considered a sealed container. Luckily one of the other attendants walked with me to a shop at the station and found some duct tape to wrap around the tupperware container I had in my suitcase and I was admitted to the train. It depends on the security agent I guess. So be sure to have your knives in a sealed container!
