Toledo or Segovia (Spain)

We have allotted 1/2-1 day for a side-trip outside of Madrid. We would appreciate insight from those of you who have travelled to these destinations. Thanks in advance!

For a first visit to the area, Toledo is probably your best bet.....more of an immersion into the mixture of Christian, Islamic, and Jewish culture that makes up Spanish history. Buy your tickets ahead of time, if your schedule is set, at RENFE up to 62 days in advance. Then you'll be assured of seats on the trains you want, going and coming, so you can maximize your day.

Toledo!!

Take the 25 minute train from the Atocha station in Madrid...when you arrive in Toledo there are cabs at the station..go to Plaza Zodocover, the 'center' and explore from there....or take the city bus outside the parking lot at the street...easy to get around the area -- but remember there are very few leval spots in the city!

If you are going in the summer, Segovia is a nice break from the heat.

Can't go wrong on either. I'd probably lean more toward Segovia myself - I loved the 2nd-century Roman aqueduct, and the cathedral (tho' the Toledo cathedral is amazing, as well - it's the Spanish equivalent of England's Canterbury Cathedral, both in terms of its architectural AND spiritual significance). Segovia's Plaza Mayor is quite enjoyable as well, almost as good as Salamanca's. ;)

Toledo. Stay overnight, if you can. The city is so picturesque and beautiful all lit up at night.
