I never make resservations, but would like advice on your 1 or 2 favorite things you saw or ate. I'll be there in Sept for 3 nights.
My favorite things in Lisbon were walking around the Barrio Alto/Chiado and taking the trams (like #12 to the Alfama) and funiculars (like Elevador da Gloria) to the viewpoints. I really enjoyed my time in Lisbon. Have a wonderful trip!
Visit Belem for sure. And while there have the famous pastis. I also love the port tasting room at the top of the furnicular and the ruins of the church nearby. Roasted chicken with piri-piri sauce and a nice vinho verde is not to miss though very simple.
Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for
Chicken at Bomjardin. Grilled sardines. The Gulbenkian. The monastery at Belem. For pix see http://kwilhelm.smugmug.com/Travel/Lisbon-and-Morocco-2008/Lisbon
The Gulbenkian - a special menory.
All the above and: Baixa neighborhood, Cafe Suica, the famous squares or pracas - Rossio, Praca do Comercio, Praca dos Restauradores. Castel de Sao Jorge, the Alfama district and the Cathedral Se, the old cathedral with Roman and Moorish ruins in the cloister. In Chiado neighborhood the Convento do Carmo is interesting - ruins of a convent built in the 1300s to 1400s and destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. Also visit Cafe A Brasileira. There's also the Panteon (Santa Engracia) modeled on the Roman Panteon.
Lots to see and do. It will be fun researching and making your choices. Have a great time!
My wife and I just got back from Portugal. We spent six nights in Lisbon - great city. I'd recommend walking through the Alfama neighborhood up to the Castle ( Sao Jorge ). There's a great little wine bar just below the entrance to the castle that's well worth going to. We also enjoyed walking around the city and going up to the incredible viewpoints in the Bairro Alto area. Definitely take one of the trollies around town - they're a blast and you get to see a lot of the city. Our favorite thing, however, was just walking around the city and soaking up the atmosphere.
I agree with everyone else. If you are looking for dinner, the mall in the Chiado district actually has some great restaurants. There is a soup place that we went to every night we were there, they had such great soup! I would fly back to Lisbon just to go to this soup place. They also had a pasta place and a Brazilian place which were yummy, too. The Portuguese restaurant was a little funny. Chicken fries and an egg. Which is typical, just not what I was expecting. Lisbon is a beautiful city!
The Gulbenkian museum - wonderful, amazing, uncrowded museum. Belem, where the monastery cloister is so finely carved in the most beautiful stone, it looks like a wedding cake. The coach museum and Tower of Belem are also highly recommended. Ride the tram out to Belem, and ride it up to the Alfama district too. Get a daily or multi-day travel pass, it's a good deal. You can get on the trams as well as the Elevator de Santa Justa. At the top is a great overlook, looking out over the lower town (Baixa I think it's called). Lisbon is perhaps the most underrated capital city in western Europe (along with Madrid), and September is a great time to be there.
I'll add my vote for the Gulbenkian if you're into museums at all. The viewpoints - miradouros - just about any of them are wonderful. Ride the trolleys, but seriously watch out for pickpockets. They especially love the trolley. I caught one literally with his hand in my purse and he just smiled at me and moved over to grope the pocket of my friend.
