To and from Munich Airport

I understand the Munich airport is isolated. Are there hotels nearby to stay in order to catch an early flight? If not what are some recommendations for the night before a flight? We have a rental car.

The last two years we have spent the last night in Freising before flying out of Munich. It has a nice town center and a monastery with a beautiful chapel. Freising has a long history and was an early competitor or Munich. It is famous at this moment as the place that the present pope was ordained.

We liked the Hotel zur Gred which a typical gasthaus-restaurant, is close to the train station and is reasonably priced:

Freising is 15 minutes by cab or car to the airport. There is also a dedicated shuttle bus from the Freising train station to the airport at 2+ euros per person.

There is a hotel right at the Munich airport, and there also hotels in Freising, a short distance by bus from the airport.

Unless your flight is awfully early, I would stay near the Hauptbahnhof in downtown Munich. There are some reasonable hotels nearby. The S-bahn takes about 40 minutes (plus/minus 1 minute, depending on the direction) from the Hbf to the airport. There are three per hour starting just after 3 AM and 6 per hour all day long after about 5 AM. For comparison, the Leonardo Express, from Rome Termini to Fiumicino, takes 31 minutes and only runs every half hour and not before 5:52.

Hi Mike,
Can highly recommend two places. Park Hotel (Best Western) in Erding and the Moevenpick Hotel in Hallbergmoos (sp?). Moevenpick is very close to Freising (a nice old town) just 10 min. from the airport. Park Hotel (Erding) is about 15 to 20 min. to the airport. We really prefer the Park Hotel and Erding. Hotel is just a few min. walk to the very pretty old town of Erding. Great place to spend your last night in Germany. They also have a parking lot there. I returned our car to the airport our last afternoon, I got a cab back to the hotel. We spent the afternoon/evening in Erding. We got a cab the next morning (it was at 5am for 7am flight) to the airport. With a later flight I'd probably keep the car, but didn't care to deal with returning a car and getting to our gate so early. Oh, cab fare was 20 Euros per trip. That was last year.

The town of Hallbergmoos is very close to the airport. This year we stayed at the Regent Park Airport Hotel the night before our 7AM flight. They have a 24 hour shuttle and the early bird breakfast starts at 3AM! The hotel even provides alarm clocks that they set for you at check in!

They have a web site.

The requirement to stay close to the airport for a flight the next morning is really not as important as staying close to a subway station.

This can be true Tim, but it depends on your comfort level. Two years in a row we stayed at a hotel very close to the Munich main train station. However, we had 7AM flights. Yes, we got out to the airport just fine, but it was a struggle physically, and doing so at 4:30AM made it even worse.
