We are taking the Bernina Express to Tirano and want to go to Bellagio for two nights before making the return trip to Zurich via Lugano...I'm confused on best logistics!! Dates 9/1-9/3...thx!!

I do not know if it is the "best" way, but you can take the train from Tirano to Varenna, and a ferry from there to Bellagio. To get to Lugano, take the ferry from Bellagio to Como, and the train from there to Lugano.

Deanna, The method suggested by Lola is the most direct route. The rail trip from Tirano to Varenna is only about 1 - 1.5 hours, so very easy. When you arrive in Varenna, disembark and walk downhill to the Ferry dock, which is in front of Albergo Olivedo (big yellow building, you can't miss it). The Ferry ride from there to Bellagio is about 20-minutes. For the trip from Bellagio to Lugano, you can either use the method that Lola suggested OR travel back to Varenna and take the trip from there to Milano Centrale (1H:03M). The trip from there to Lugano is only about an hour. When you arrive in Lugano, the station is somewhat "on the hill" above town, but there's a Funicular down to the main part of the city. Depending on which Hotel you're staying in, you might consider a Taxi (much easier with luggage). Happy travels!

Thx for info! Do I need to purchase the train tickets ahead of time or just at the station?

Deanna, I wouldn't bother purchasing tickets ahead of time. As I recall, the train from Tirano to Varenna is a Regionale so you may not be able to purchase in advance. After arrival in Tirano, if you find that the next train to Varenna is full (not likely), have a leisurely coffee as there will be another one along in an hour or two.

Hi Deanna. Another option for Bellagio to Lugano (quickest and funnest, in my opinion) is ferry to Menaggio, then bus directly to Lugano. Enjoy your trip!
