My husband and I will be in the Mosel Valley the last week in Sept and will stay in Trier, Traben-Trabach and Cochem. We will arrive by train and love to bike. Would love to here from travelers who have been to this area.

Hi Jan,
We were in the Mosel area in October 2007. Loved it! We stayed 4 nights in Valwig, which is just scross the river from Cochem. Of all the towns along the Mosel, we liked Cochem best. Try to visit nearby Burg Eltz during your stay in Cochem. Fantastic!

We stayed in Cochem in August. We liked Cochem, visited the castle there (guided tours required, and only available in German), and did separate day trips to Trier and Burg Eltz. Even though we had a rental car, we took the train to Trier; it was about an hour each way. Unfortunately the weather was very overcast and rainy much of the time we were there, so it was hard to just enjoy the scenery. The wine was good, and although I'm not really an avid shopper, I thought Cochem had a nice little shopping area. We saw people biking along the river, on a nice, paved path along the river.
We visited that area this past summer and loved it. T-T is a little gem of Jugenstihl architecture. The natural setting of the Mosel valley is wonderful. The food and wine are good; and the people, friendly. Had a fabulous, if pricey, meal at the Hotel Bellevue in T-T.
And don't forget to visit Bernkastel-Kues which I think is the most beautiful of towns in the Mosel river valley... Also just in the hinterlands of Trier starts the 110 miles long Saar-Hunsrück hike. Of course you can also hike just tiny parts of it for half a day or a day. Some pictures here: http://www.saar-hunsrueck-steig.de/bildergalerie.php
I second Andreas' tip about Bernkastel-Kues, which is my favorite town(s) on the Mosel. But you cannot reach BK by train. To get there, you either have to take a river cruise or a bus, which may be why Rick does not list it in his recommendations. It might be a stretch to reach by bike from the places you mention, but I believe you can take a bike on the boats cruising the Mosel.
We visited Cochem last November and loved the area. It turned out to be one of my favorite visit. I cannot think of the little hotel we stayed in, but the little bar with the locals was simple wonderful.
I love biking along the Mosel; I've been in that area several times, by train from Koblenz, and then staying in Treis-Karden and renting a bicycle from a little bike shop there. There is a bike path on both sides of the river for most of its length, and the little towns along the way are wonderful. There is a Mosel Radweg (Mosel Bike Path) map available; I think I Googled it, and ordered it from the UK using my credit card.
