I've decided to purchase a "handy" at the Frankfurt airport. Thanks to you guys, I know the store and the approximate price to pay. However, after that I'm not so self-assured. So here are some of my questions: When choosing a phone, what are the features, etc. I should have (and ones I don't need)? I'm sure the store will help me set it up, but what should I be looking out for at that point? I will also be using the phone in Switzerland and Austria. How does that change what I'm doing? And are there any odd things about phones or phone service in those countries that I should be aware of, like data charges, roaming charges, et al? Thanks!
First of all, what is your primary purpose for buying the phone? Keeping in contact with members of your party? Calling ahead for reservations? Browsing the internet? Keeping in touch with people back home? You will probably want a pay-as-you-go plan. Otherwise, cell phone contracts in Germany are for a minimum of two years. You'll pay a higher tarrif for using the phone in Austria and Switzerland, and you'll have to know the country codes if dialing a number in those countries, but that's about the only difference.
Thanks, Tom. Yeah, having the phone is for all those reasons although I'm likely to call back to the US with Skype whenever possible. Seems like I can pick up a basic phone for about 30 euro at the airport. I suppose SIM cards for each country, loaded with enough minutes, is the way to go.
