Tipping in Berlin

My wife and I have been in Berlin now for just under 24 hours. We have eaten a few meals in a few different spots and service has NOT been in included. In fact, the checks are imprinted with "tip is not included". Granted, we have been slaves to bigger, more touristy joints (we plan on getting away from that this evening), but we have bad to tip. Just an FYI.

Because a service charge is a service charge and not a tip. Frankly though, if you are going to places that have that printed on the bill, you should report them. They aren't supposed to do that, but they do have a point. People don't tip, cause they think the server is getting that service charge. Believe me, they don't. The owner or company gets that money. Tip about 10% if you were happy. If you weren't happy, don't tip at all. The server may also be tipping out to the kitchen and bar staff too. When the bill comes and it says 25 euro, give the server what ever bills you want, tell them 27 or 28 euro and they will give you the correct change back. If it is a fine dining restaurant you will want to tip a bit more, but never more than 10%. Again, if the service was cruddy, feel free to leave nothing, but do let the manager know about any deficiencies.
