Hi- I am visiting Bavaria this summer and have a question on timing of the castle tours.
We will be leaving Rothenburg on Friday morning (we have a car) and will take the autobahn straight to Fussen. Mapquest says it is 2 hours via the autobahn. What time would you rec I reserve for the castle tour> (I would reserve tix onlibe before the trip). Do you think I will have time to do both castles?
Thanks for your advice
Check Rick's books. You have to make reservations and time it pretty carefully. He's got tips on that.
I did this exact thing. The mapquest directions are pretty accurate. I gave myself some good buffer time though. We left Rothenburg really early...like 6:30 am I think. I had reservations at the castles at maybe 11am?? Anyway, we drove with our rented car down to Fussen. Stopped along the way for lunch. There is plenty of time to see both. We toured them and then headed to Munich that same night. I think 10am is safe. 11am if you are wanting to stop more along the way.
Just a note. If you travel during the summer, and timing is an issue, take the A7, rather than the Romantic Road. You'll get there much quicker, and you'll avoid the potential parking lot the Romantic Road can sometimes resemble.
...Hmm, re-reading your post, looks like you that's just what you planned.
It's too bad you will not be spending at least 1 night in the little village of Schwnagau-Horn. Located in the surrounding area at the base of the castles it is one of the most relaxing and carefree places we've visited. We've stayed there on 2 different occasions for a couple of nights. It's a great base to explore the castles along with Linderhof Castle in Austria. Very very nice area to stay.
WOW! What a responsive community. I appreciate all of your insights.
I know- 2 weeks just doesnt seem to be enough time to see it all! (And we are limiting ourselves to Bavaria)
We will spend 2 nights in the Garmish area- I am having trouble deciding b/w Mittenwald (Hotel Garni Edlhuber) and Oberammergau (Landhotel Lärchenhügel). Any opinions out there?
The rest of the trip we are heading to Chiemsee- we are staying at a hff (family farm) near Chiemsee where we can day trip to Berchesgarten, Salzburg, the lake and maybe Halstad?
We have been fortunate enough to be invited to a wedding in Chiemsee.
I'll be sure to post on the farm stay experience.
I don't know either of those hotels, but I'd give slight edge to staying in Mittenwald. Your basically choosing between amazing scenery and fantastic scenery.
Hi Dee,
Mittenwald would be my choice. We stayed twice recently at Pension Schwalbennestl (in Mittenwald) and can recommend it. If interested, we have some photo's at:

While in the Chiemsee area, try to see Ludwig's Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee) Palace. Amazing.

Hope this helps.
