Timeframe for Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial

Question for my friends here....we will be taking the train from Paris to Bayeux and are scheduled to arrive at 12:20pm. We have the rest of this day free before taking the Overlord tour at 8:20 the next morning which will drop us off at the train station for our return trip to Paris. We would like to spend a bit more time at the American Cemetery than our tour will probably allow so we were thinking of heading there after our arrival in town. We are not renting a car so we are thinking of taking taxis to/from Bayeux...I was told by the hotel I should expect to pay about 36 euros each way. Will taxis be hard to find at the cemetery when it's time to leave (we want to stay for the flag lowering at the end of the day)? Should we book these taxis ahead of time through the hotel? Is this even the best option to get to/from the cemetery? Scoured the various pages here and really didn't find any information about this.....Any advice would be appreciated...thanks....Cici

I don't recall seeing any taxis at the American Cemetery when we were there. I'd either rent a car for the afternoon or book a car and driver or a round-trip taxi in advance. Your hotel should be able to help you do that.

What time of year will you be there? Unless your Bayeux-Cemetery taxi driver is willing to hang around and wait till you're ready to leave (which I doubt), I wouldn't count on the odds being real good of finding one when you're ready to leave. It's much cheaper/more convenient to rent a car for the day, especially if you can drive manual. It's quite easy to get to the cemetery from Bayeux.

Thanks everyone...we will be there next month. We really don't want all the fuss associated with renting a car and it looks like the last bus service is at 5:20. According to the cemetery website they are open in the summer until six....so I think we will go ahead and reserve taxis in advance from the hotel. I appreciate your responses...have a great day! My son and I did this same trip last October (train to Bayeux arriving 12:20pm, Overlord Band of Brothers tour next day with the very-knowledgeable Olivier, dropped at train station afterwards). Enjoyed it all! One suggestion - for dinner your first night check out La Rapier. We had lunch there for 18 euro each, 3-course menu. I'm not sure what the dinner prices are but the food was wonderful!
