Time to clear security at AMS

We have a flight from Brussels to AMS to San Francisco in April and when I made the reservations, there were not the added security procedures. KLM gave us a 2hr layover at AMS between our flights. Is that enough time to clear security for our US flight?

Two hours should be more than enough time. Your bigger concern should be the immigration line at AMS getting into the non-Schengen half of the terminal. If you're running short of time there is usually an express line for travelers with tight connections. There will be a montior above listing which flights qualify for express. At AMS the security screenings for transatlantic flights is done at the gate instead of a centralized area. So as as as you can make to the gate before the doors on the aircraft are closed, you're good to go.

Thanks for the info, Mike. I forgot about the immigration aspect. We'll keep an eye on the crunch time board.

I have the same situation with a tighter connection.

Arriving at AMS from Nice (on a Saturday) at 9:00 a.m.

Departing to Portland at 10:10 a.m.

Booked it through Delta so I presume they have knowledge of connection times at AMS. And perhaps some obligation to reasonably accommodate late arriving flights.

I suppose there are worse things than an unanticipated day in Amsterdam.

As long as your flight lands on time you have a good shot of making the transatlantic flight. But if you're checking baggage, there's a good chance it won't be on the same plane.

Thanks, Michael and Eric, for your postings. I've talked with KLM and they are very comfortable about our layover time, so I have to trust that they know the situation there at AMS and have booked the flights accordingly.

AMS doesn't have the best reputation for dealing with luggage in a timely manner. We sometimes waited for an hour at the luggage carroussel. However, their security procedures are very thorough AND efficient. Have never seen any long line-ups there.

Thanks, Beatrix, something to be said for carry-on per Rick Steves' advice. Although carry-on restrictions get tougher each year. Maybe the best thing is just travel in the clothes on your back and wash a lot.
