we are going to spend the day in malaga before flying out from the airport in the afteroon. We are thinking that hanging out at La Malagueta is probably the closest and best beach for us. Does anyone know where we would catch public transportation to the airport from around the beach area?
ALSO: Is there storage at the airport if we want to drop off our bags earlier in the day and then get them when we depart?
Donna,
I am not aware of any public bus that will take you to the airport. Most Malaguenos take the train from the center of town. After going down about 10 steps under the tracks, a ramp will lead you uphill to the airport. Don't know if they have storage at the airport, suggest you check with Malaga TI. It is actually on your way to La Malagueta, if you're walking. You might check with Malaga forum on Trip Advisor also.
After checking the TripAdvisor forum on Malaga, I have discovered that there are indeed buses from Malaga to the airport.http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187438-c134024/Malaga:Spain:To.And.From.The.Malaga.Airport.html
Another poster on the forum mentioned this regarding stored luggage at the airport.http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187438-i333-k3733383-Malaga_Left_Luggage_post_cruise-Malaga_Costa_del_Sol_Andalusia.html
Buen viaje, Donna
Thank you so much ! Perhaps taking a train from the center of town ( rather than a bus) is better.
Do you know if the train station is within a walk of the La Malagueta beach AND whether or not there is luggage storage at the train station?
I agree that taking the train would probably be better...traffic out to the airport from downtown can be a bear. The commuter trains (cercanias) run out to the airport from the main station (Maria Zambrona) once every half hour, and take about 15 minutes. And yes, there is a luggage storage area at the train station....it's down the left aisle after you walk in the main doors.
As for whether you're within walking distance, I guess it depends what you consider "walking distance!" ;) You're about 2 1/2 kilometers (1 1/2 miles) from the beach to the train station. Some of the walk is pleasant, along the park-lined Paseo del Parque...the rest is typical residential/commercial areas. As you walk along Paseo del Parque, you'll also be walking past the old center of Malaga, with its cathedral, Roman-era forum, Moorish Alcazaba, narrow streest, and great little restaurants....in case it's not beach weather.
P.S....the main train station also houses a small shopping mall, with some very nice clothing stores (among others.)
Hi Norm and Others
I totally appreciate all the help you provided. I believe we are all set now.
Many thanks!
Donna, there are buses on the main street near the train station that will take you La Malagueta and back. Probably a 10 minute bus ride.
