Time in Frankfurt OR more time in Vienna?

The GAS tour ends in Vienna on Saturday morning. Our flight back to the U.S. leaves from Frankfurt early Sunday afternoon. The tour spends a little more than a day in Vienna, and no time at all in Frankfurt. We have not previously been to either city. I have not yet booked our flight from Vienna to Frankfurt because we are trying to decide whether to (a) spend Saturday in Vienna and take an early evening flight to Frankfurt, or (b) fly out of Vienna on Saturday morning and spend that afternoon/evening in Frankfurt. If you had the choice, what would you do? I'm particularly interested to hear from anyone who's done the GAS tour: Did you feel you could have used a little more time in Vienna? (P.S. I have a hotel booked at FRA for the Saturday night. I believe getting from FRA into Frankfurt proper is quick'n'easy, but please correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

As much as I love Frankfurt, I think I would spend the time in Vienna. Can you not fly home from Vienna rather than spend the time and money getting to Frankfurt? If it isn't possible to change your flight, then consider staying in the city rather than at the airport. The trains only take 11-13 min. going from the city to the airport, but there is nothing to do or see out there at the airport. City hotels are usually cheaper than the airport ones too. Depending on the hotel, you may spend more time waiting on your shuttle bus, then it would take to get to Frankfurt.

When Jo says pick Vienna - you KNOW that's the one. Seriously, Vienna will be much more interesting. I'd just set up a connecting type flight schedule and fly into Frankfurt that morning.

How many days does the GAS tour do in Vienna? If it's two or less I'd certainly add the extra day to Vienna. There is a lot to see and do there, but you'll also probably want downtime to relax in the atmospheric cafes and eat cakes and drink the wonderful wine and coffee.

I'm guessing you are doing the 14-day tour, flying into Frankfurt and transferring to start the in Trier. If so, I'd stay in Vienna, since you will be spending a lot of time in Germany on the tour and, while I loved Frankfurt (many thanks to Jo for that), it won't be much different from what you've already seen. Vienna will be. And I echo Jo's advice, if you possibly can, fly open-jaw.

Vienna it is, then! (I had a feeling.) We'll just fly up to Frankfurt on Saturday evening. I did look into open jaws, but it was unbelievably expensive. Doing it this way is saving me somewhere in the region of $1200; I think we can put up with an extra 90-minute flight for that kind of savings. Thanks for your input. Much appreciated! :-)

I'm surprised that using a multi city option would cost anywhere near that much. That's way over the odds. Its usually a couple of hundred dollars (US) more or sometimes a little less but $1200 makes me wonder if you looked at it as the sum of two one way tickets rather than using the "multi-city" or "open jaws" options on the website. If it was found by a travel agent they may not know how to do it. .... ....

Well, I used the multi-city options on Travelocity, Expedia, British Airways, Lufthansa, Icelandair, and one other ... I can't remember now. And I tried all kinds of combinations too. I spent well over a week going through various permutations, and I didn't come up with anything financially feasible for me. (I had been hoping to use my BA miles, but no such luck.) I'm happy enough to have to fly back up to Frankfurt. It's a short flight and (confession time) I actually like airports.

We haven't had any luck with open jaw in Europe either but you're making the right choice: Vienna is just awesome.
