Tickets for opera at Vienna State Operahouse

One of the highlights of our Europe trip I know will be seeing an opera in Vienna. Looking ahead as we will be there May 20-22 I was thrilled to see that Macbeth will be performed on May 20th. However, you can't seem to buy tix for that date or any of the other show dates... Does this mean it is sold out? Or is it just too early? It is about 2 months away. Can I even buy tix here in the US? Anyone with experience buying there, your input would be appreciated!

-- Also just wanted to note that my hubby is not keen on going there in the first place so we do need to buy seated tix :)

Yeah, I read about that in the book. But we are looking to buy 2 of the inexpensive seats.

The Operahouse website says that you can request an "allocation" of tickets now, and they will send you an email when they start selling tickets. There is no guarantee that you will get seats, however. It all depends on demand and your location in the request queue.

This is unfortunately normal for the world famous European opera houses and symphonies. They are just very popular and can't always meet demand. It's the same trying to get seats to, say, the Berlin Philharmonic, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, etc. -- not to mention the famous Bayreuth Wagner festival, which is sold out years in advance.

You might be able to find seats through a ticket broker, but will probably pay more than the official price.

The website viennaticketonline.com appears to be selling tickets to the Staatsoper. The cheapest is 44 Euros, with shipping fee.
