my wife are planning to spend a week or so in the region of Thuringia Germany. We enjoy mostly exploring the old quaint towns/castles/cathedrals/local sights etc, and doing some casual hiking. My thoughts were Erfurt,Eisenach, and Weimar. Any input on any of these towns as far as "must see" or "not worth the time." I get conflicting impressions from the guidebooks especially for Erfurt and Eisenach. Any recommendations on better places in the region perhaps more worthwhile.Thanks.
Martin, all three of them are beautiful in different ways and are worth visiting. They are all so close by you can actually do all three of them in one day, especially since Weimar is pretty small. The main sight of Eisenach is the Wartburg castle which is definitely worth visiting. It was one of the first East German sights President Bill Clinton visited back in the early 90s. Also the mountain region in the South of the state is worth a trip and there are great hikes. It also makes sense to visit Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt for a day. There are plenty of gardens and castles in the East of Saxony-Anhalt.
