We want to do the Interlaken loop via train. We were thinking of staying in Berne, but I just read about Thun and found a nice hotel. So can we do the Interlaken loop when staying in Thun? Or do we need to train back to Berne and begin loop from there? I am assuming I can get to Thun from Berne. Any thoughts on Thun as a place to stay for 3 nights. Thanks.
What exactly do you mean by "Interlaken loop"?
You can check train schedules at the Swiss Rail Site:
In any event, Thun is a stop on the rail line between Interlaken and Bern. There are direct trains every 30 minutes.
Bill,
I stayed in Thun about 10 years ago at the home of the family of a friend. It is a very pleasant town which does not feel particularly touristy.
I don't remember a lot of details, but I know that I took the boat on Lake Thun over to Interlaken and from there went up to the top of the Schilthorn and also to see Trummelbach Falls.
I don't know what the Interlaken loop is, but I thought that Thun was a very nice place.

Not sure what you mean by the Interlaken loop.
Thun is effectively a bedroom community for Bern, with a castle.
It has a wonderful lakeshore on the Thunersee (Lake Thun in English). Frequent boats go from Thun to Interlaken, although for my money the Brienzersee on the other side of Interlaken makes for a much better boat ride, especially if you get off the boat at Geissebach (sp?) for the waterfall.
Almost every train which goes between Bern (German spelling without the final e which is French, not spoken in Bern) will stop in Thun, so you don't need to go into Bern to go to Interlaken.
That being said, you really should see Bern. It is a fantastic place.
