Knowing my husband and I will be taking our three young adult children on a whiz trip through Germany, I'm wondering about advice you guys would give regarding staying in Ruette instead of Fussen. Our kids (17, 22 and 24) enjoy each other's company but they are young and will have more energy at the end of the day than will my husband and I. What I mean is that it would be nice for a night or two to not entertain them after a long day of seeing the sights aong the way from Lindau, where we will have spent the night before. I know Fussen is more touristy, I'm not to keen on that, but I've been there before and the black swans on the river are worth stopping to see and spending some time before retiring for the night...but I don't know if staying in Reutte might be too quiet. One thing I have considered and worked on for our Lindau stay was to get them a room at the Youth Hostel there so they could meet other traveling students like themselves. However, the type of room I hoped to get for them was not available. So first question...staying in Ruette, quieter, for two nights, or choosing Fussen instead.
I'm also taking a look at Mittenwald or Garmisch-Partenkirchen to get off the beaten track and to use the two nights there for seeing a few castles, bike riding, Zugspitze, and maybe going back the Fussen way and gliding or flying from the airport. I hate to stray from RS's book because it takes so much more research but maybe one of you has a good idea of a place in either of those two towns where we could either have a large family room or a few doubles and a single. So, there you go. Any advice?
Garmisch-Partenkirchen may be what you want with your young adults. It is larger than the other towns you are considering, so the night life is better for them, leaving mom and dad alone to sleep. But it's not so big that they'll have to drive anywhere after their night on the village.
