Hi All - I've been working on planning a trip to Spain (and a bit of Morocco) - I am going with my husband at the end of June for two and a half weeks - and would love some feedback on our itinerary (I want to make sure it will be relaxing but also feel like we are getting a good mix of history/culture/shopping): Day 1: Arrive in Barcelona (overnight Barcelona) Day 2: Day in Barcelona (overnight Barcelona) Day 3: Day in Barcelona (visit Monserrat) (overnight Barceona) Day 4: Rent car, drive to Valencia with stop in Tarragona (overnight Valencia) Day 5: Day in Valencia (Overnight in Valencia) Day 6: Drive to Grenada (stop in Nerja) (overnight in Grenada) Day 7: Grenada (visit Alhambra) (overnight in Grenada) Day 8: Drive to Cordoba (overnight in Cordoba) Day 9: Cordoba (overnight in Cordoba) Day 10: Drive to Malaga (overnight in Malaga) Day 11: Drive to Algeciras - visit Gibralter (overnight in Algeciras) Day 12: Ferry to Tangiers (overnight Tangiers) Day 13: Tangiers (overnight Tangiers) Day 14: Flight to Paris Day 15: Paris
Day 16: Paris Day 17: Fly home : ( Is this too ambitious? Would love some feedback before I start booking hotels. Thanks!!!!
Well, that is a lot of moving and I am sure you will get some great advice on how to consolidate that. I did not do all those cities, so can't advise on that, but if you are going to Tangiers you might want to add another day and travel out a bit to Asilah or Chefchouen. I loved both of those towns, but I did also enjoy Tangiers. It was a big city, and intense, and if that is all you can do I would still go. But, there is so much more to Morocco and a touch of it is better than nothing. We left from Tarifa, and did not go to Gibraltar. Also loved Malaga. We had a great time there.
All the places are worthwhile and it is very doable, I just don't quite understand your route. After leaving Valencia I would change to this: Day 6: Granada (overnight in Granada) Day 7: Granada (visit Alhambre and overnight in Granada). Day 8: stop in Nerja (overnight in Malaga) Day 9: visit Gibraltar (overnight in Tarifa) Day 10: Ferry to Tangiers (overnight in Tangiers) Day 11: Stay somewhere else in Morocco. Day 12: Another night in Morocco. Day 13: back to Tangiers (overnight). Day 14: Flight to Paris. My Reasoning: IMO I would not drive down to Nerja just to return to Granada when you can stop there en route to Malaga. I would not drive all the way UP to Cordoba just to return to the south unless you are going to visit Sevilla as well. After leaving Malaga it's a short drive to visit Gibraltar and then finish up in Tarifa (a nice place and a shorter ferry ride to Morocco). If you're going down to Morocco for more than 1 night - go beyond Tangiers. This is doable and we've driven in the area, I just don't like spending time backtracking rather than just moving on. Hasta la vista!
Hi Bob - Thanks for your reply! The route I planned was just based on my looking at the map - and thinking about how much time each stop would take. I like your suggested route - but we want to stop in Cordoba and see the famous mosque and synagogue. I dont have a special interest in staying there, but I dont mind. How would you incorporate that into the route you suggested? I would also love to see other parts of Morocco, but I am hesistant to explore it alone with just my husband (safety/being hasseled). I've looked into some private tours and they are just outrageously expensive - $1500 - $1800 for three days. Thats why I planned two nights in Tangiers and thought we would hire a local guide. Am I wrong on exploring a bit of Morocco ourselves? I appreciate the advice!! Miriam
Cordoba is very worthwhile IMO but you could easily see it in a day and one night. I question not visiting Sevilla unless you've already been there. I'd certainly choose Sevilla over Valencia. Can't comment on Morocco.
Hi Miriam, If you're only going to see Tangiers and really want to see Cordoba, change the route that I posted to: Day 10: Ferry to Tangiers for the day (overnight in Tarifa) Day 11: Sevilla (overnight) Day 12: Cordoba (overnight) Day 13: Cordoba (overnight) Day 14: fly to Paris. Reasons: You can get a small taste for Tangier in a day and if your mind is set on Cordova (and it should be!) don't waste extra time here. This would all be very doable, no back tracking and on main routes. I do not know if your flight to Paris is already booked from Tangier? Also, I feel that Valencia is a great place to stop for the night on the way to Granada from Barcelona. Bob
