Things to do in Frankfurt

Hi Guys I'm going to be travelling around Europe at the beginning of September and I have pretty much everything planned out except for what we are doing once we get to Frankfurt. We will be there for two days so do you guys have any ideas?

What do you like to do, what are your interests? Is it just you or are you traveling with anyone? Where else will you be going?
There is a big trade fair 14-19 Sept. so you don't want to be there then. Hotel prices will be way too high.

There is a great wine fest on the Fressgasse from 1-10 Sept. when 30 vinyards from the Rhine region present around 600 wines.

Do you want suggestions for museums, churches, historic sites, Jewish history, medieval history, concerts, clubs, restaurants, flea markets.

If you could make it here the last weekend in Aug. we have one of the premier events in Germany, the Museums Riverbank Fest. This draws about 3 million people and is a lot of fun. I can give you more information if you are interested.

There are a couple day trips by train you could make such as to Mainz which will allow you to settle in, overcome jetlag a bit and get used to the train system over here.

I love Mainz for the Gutenburg museum and this great Asian resturant next to Saturn, along with the shopping. There's also a chocolate museum near.

Of course Frankfurt has some lovely sights and museums on which Jo is an expert. :)

Option A. - Römerberg, Alte Nikolai (1290), Haus Wertheim (1479), St. Leonhards Church (1219), Jörge Ratgeb Wall Paintings in the Karmeliter Cloister (1513-1519), Pauls Kirche, the Palace and Roman Bath Ruins, the Kaiserdom, the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall, the Leinwand Haus (1399), the Klein Markt Halle, Eschenheimer Turm (1425), Alte Oper, go up on the Main Tower for sunset, have dinner at the Friedberger Warte or the Sachsenhause Warte.

Option B. - Add in the Deutsche Ordens Church (Teutonic Order of Knights) built in 1309, visit the Palmengarten, take tram #12 to Bornheim on Wed. or Sat. for the Farmers Market and a walk down the Berger strasse with a stop in the Chinese Garden at Bethmann Park, on Fri. visit the market on Schiller Strasse, or at the Konstablerwache on Thurs.and Sat. When evening comes, take a walk through Alt Sachsenhausen with dinner in one of the old applewine pubs, like Dauth-Schneiders.

Option C - if you haven't been able to get to any old towns while here in Germany, then make plans to visit the Frankfurt neighborhood of Hoechst. There you can walk through a dry moat next to the old city wall, see lots of original half-timbered houses set on narrow cobble-stoned streets, a residential palace and a schloss, and St.Justinus, one of the oldest churches in Germany, built in 850. A visit to the Höchest Porcelain Factory would also be interesting. Tram #11 goes there and lets you see lots of Frankfurt as the ride takes about 45 min. Or take the S bahn for a shorter ride.

Museum recommendations depending on your taste? The Städel for classical art, Liebieg Haus for sculpture, Judengasse & Jewish Museum, Archeology Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Kunsthandwerk Museum
