Just wondering what there is to do around Munich Central Train Station? What hotels are recommended? Is it downtown? Is there shopping around there? Thanks all.
The station itself and the surrounding areas have lots of places to grab a bite. As far as shopping goes, you're better off going to Kaufingerstrasse. The shops around the station were more "flea market" bargain shop, I felt. If you want to visit a beer hall, the Augustiner-Bräu is just north of it.
Main Station is an easy (no more than 10 minute) walk to the pedestrian street and Marienplatz. A very large department store with a great food section runs most of the long block between the two. I walked it often when last in Munich. Any hotel near marienplatz is convenient, also a number of hotels near the station. We stayed at hotel Wolf- right opposite the station, seems to be a businessmen's hotel, but we really enjoyed it. great old-fashioned service
As the others noted, the station sits close enough to the pedestrian shopping zone leading towards Marienplatz. I wouldn't use the term "Red Light District" that Rick Steves uses to describe it, but neither is it Munich's finest area. For a tourist, most of the sites of interest sit in a fairly compact, very walkable area.
