Planning a trip this spring and wondering how far away (time and distance) we need to be to avoid the crowds and inflated prices of the Cannes Film Festival May 13-24, 2009. Unfortunately, our itinerary puts us in that area at approximately that time. Anyone know how big of a problem it is to travel in the South of France in May?

Nice had no unusually large crowds when I was there this past May. I am not too sure if prices were inflated or not for the festival.

We stayed at Sainte Maxime at that time. It was completely unaffected.

Hi Jacki. I was in the Riviera in Spring of '08 just before the Cannes Film Festival (a few days before). We stayed in Antibes. I really liked the location because it's a short train ride into Nice & you get to explore a whole little city that's more yours. The ramparts are fun to walk at night and it feels really safe. Didn't notice higher prices.
