we are going to be visiting Arles,Nimes ect...and then driving to Montpellier. I was researching the camarague thinking on our way to montpellier to drive through the area. I have done some research on some of the towns to stop in but not sure which ones are ones we should not miss.
any suggestions would be helpful.
Sts. Maries de la Mere is pleasant, though I would not call it "must-not-miss." You can eat lunch there, rent bikes, and take a boat ride up the Petite Rhone. The church there has particular significance to the Roma (Gypsies).
Here is a website that might be useful for the Camargue: http://www.parc-camargue.fr/English/index.php?callback=loadcpage&page_id=333&site_id=3
Rick also covers it in his book, albeit not too enthusiastically-but personally I can't wait to go when we visit Arles!
While I wouldn't put it on the "must see" list, we really enjoyed Sts. Maries. We biked along the coast and saw hundreds of flamingos and the white horses in the fields. It was just a nice day out in the country - away from all the tourists and busyness.
We enjoyed our drive through the Camargue. Try to stop in Aigues Mortes . We found Grau le Roi a very pleasant town to spend a few hours. Nice restaurants and very scenic. www.trekearth.com/.../Le_Grau_du_Roi/
