1) go to loire valley and then through normandy back to paris?
2) go to burgunday and champagne?
3) another option?

we love really great food, history, even better wine and rick steves.

I would fly into Paris , stay a while, drive down to Burgundy ... explore the wonderful villages, Burgundy canal, Morvan forest, stay at some neat little places, have some wine, and either return to Paris, or drive down to Provence and then back up to paris, and home.

If you want a "smaller than Paris" city experience consider spending a night or two in Lyon. We loved the food and the week-end markets there.

I'd probably head south, but there's nothing wrong with your picks.

Burgundy and Normandy are probably the best of those, unless you are nuts about Ancient Regime chateaux and/or champagne.

No wine in Normandy, really, but Burgundy is one of the great wine regions of the world.

I would do at least two of these three: Normandy, Loire, Burgundy. And it'd be possible to do all three. They are all equally wonderful.

Have you considered the Dordogne area? Base yourself in the charming town of Sarlat and day trip to surrounding towns. Steeped in history and drop dead natural beauty, this is my favorite part of France. Worth researching! Enjoy your trip!

You could do without a car and consider TGV and head any directions.

South would be very nice in May (Vallee du Rhone - Lyon and up to Marseille). An extra 1/2 hour and you could enjoy Provence Coast
