Anyone been there and was it worth the stop in your opinion?
Augie's! Augie's! Augie's! Been there many times during my semester of school in Salzburg. It's an old-school brewery with great beer, usually busy, full of character (and characters).
It's a great beer hall. There are food stalls surrounding it and you get your beer in steins and sit at common tables. I didn't think it was touristy at all and ended up in some great conversations with people living in Salzburg. And I still have my stein.
Here is a tip given by a friend that worked well for me there a few years ago: you choose your own stein and get in line where the guy pours the beer. He's got a tip jar next to him. When you get to the second spot in line, put a good tip in his jar and make sure he sees it; this will ensure that he gives you a really good pour with less head.
By the way, are you talking about the one in Munich or Salzburg (I wasn't even aware there was one in Salzburg until I read this thread)?
It's one of the highlights of Salzburg. Great beer right from the barrel, an indoor food hall with all kinds of Austrian specialties, and a huge outdoor beer garden - lighted at night - with tables all around. Grab your stein and get in line.
Good one Rik. I'll do just that. The one in Salzburg Tom. Thanks to both for your input. I love German beer. It is w/o a doubt great tasting. Andechs is always fun too.
Jerry - at the Braustubl the beer is Austrian, not German. You'll have to decide for yourself which is better.
I'll try both.
I've only been to the one in Salzburg. It was a decent place, probably better in the summer or weekends than when I went in late September and mid October. For me it was a decent place for some basic food and fresh beer. If you go to the one in Salzburg, be sure to check out the evening view back into the lit old city from one of the walking bridges across the Salz River near there. IMO one of the most breathtaking views in Europe.
Thanks Brad. I read the very same description in a Germany tour book that I bought last week. And of course the author also commented favorably about the beer.
I was at the Braustubl in Salzburg in May of last year. What a night! The food was good, the beer was great, but of course I am partial to any Augustiner Beer! Check out the entertainment the night you will be there. Sometimes they have bands that play. Great times to be had!
I'll do just that Rob, thanks. We'll be covering some serious ground from Berlin (the BMW cycle plant tour) all the way south to Salzburg. Many stops in between. I just received my Rick Steve's Germany 2011' book and am ready to roll. Great job on his part. Again.
Oh. My. Gosh. When I need a 'mental vacation' I go to Augustiner! YES! GO! Buy the Mug(s) and pack them well! If you haven't already done so, go to their website and poke around...I much prefer it during the warmer, sit-outside, months but anytime is good. DO pay attention to the opening hours...many sad people go too early. Drink a liter for me ;-)
I'll have at least one for everyone. Thanks for the time warning. Monday to Friday, 3 to 11 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 2.30 to 11 p.m.. Business must be good to open so late????
We don't drink yet really like it there. Great atmosphere and pretty good, not expensive, nosh. The bus goes right there! (hope the road works are finished)
Ha, Tom.... I didn't know there was an Augustiner in MUNICH till you said so!
