In Sept., we are taking the TGV from Paris to St. Pierre des Corps and staying in Amboise. Any idea how much the taxi fare would be? Is there car rental at the TGV station?We are trying to avoid driving in city areas but are comfortable in the countryside to drive to the chateaus.

From the map, it looks like the train station sits very close to the D751. Once you reach this road, driving throughout the Loire valley couldn't be easier. Avis runs a rental office in the station, and Budget and Hertz have locations close by.

Thanks Tom,
I will be getting a Michelin map and start mapping destinations! It looked loke the car rental in Amboise was through a VW dealer and I don't think it was the best place to get a rental...so car rental from the station will be easier.

Yes, there is an Avis office at this location. We set it all up before we left home. We used it last September 2008 to pick up our car for 4 nights in the Loire Valley. Piece of cake! We too wanted to avoid driving in cities, and this location enabled us to avoid major traffic as such. When it was time to return, the office was closed but we dropped it in the garage and followed the instructions they had given us. It was very easy and worked out fine. PS Check out the Auberge des Launay across from Amboise...super! Drop a line if you like; we loved this little place and it's wonderful owners and meal plan.

Very easy to rent a car here -- the rental car places are directly across the street from the train station. We dropped ours off there before returning to Paris.
