I am going to be staying at the Hostal Acapulco near the Gran Via metro station in Madrid, but with my bags on me, I don't want to risk taking the Metro there. Rick's book indicates that there is a shuttle bus from the airport to the Avenida de Americas metro station for 1E. I am wondering about how much a taxi from that station to the hotel will cost, so I can figure out whether it's a better deal to do that than to take a shuttle to the hotel from the airport. Thanks! Liz
Probably about 20 Euro, tops. Madrid cab rates are very cheap. But I don't know whether there's a taxi stand anywhere near there.
How many bags do you have? We just came back from Spain yesterday. We took our RS convertible bags on our backs through the metro with no problems. The trip was about 40 minutes with a couple of transfers. We used the 10 trip metro pass to share, but an additional 1 euro ticket was needed to be purchased as a airport surcharge upon arrival to aeropuerto stop to get up to the terminal area. I don't know if they charge you this on arrival to enter the metro or not. The metro is super simple to use--go for it. We never felt unsafe.
