Does anyone know of a good tapas tour or tour guide in San Sebastian. We will be visiting in March.
In San Sebastian, the center of the Basque country, they don't serve tapas, they serve "pinxto," which are more like small sandwiches stuffed with various fillings (I don't know why I keep seeing North American restaurant reviews describing pintxos as "smaller" than tapas.) Any of the bar-restaurants in the old part of the city (in the lee of Monte Urgull) will provide a wide selection of pinxtos, but go before 8 pm to get the best selection. The cheapest and largest selection I actually found in a bar just outside the old town. The name escapes me now, but it was on the south side of Plaza de Guipuzcoa, on Calle del Campo. It had a Murphy's and, I think, a Hennessy's sign outside, and it was a lively place upstairs and downstairs....full of young people and great music. Pinxtos there were 1.70 Euro each....in the Old Town, they reached about 2.50 Euro each. Three or 4 of these, and a beer or glass of wine, and you'll be full! Nice as a restaurant, too. You can locate it on google or microsoft maps.
Yum...I love all things tapas. There is a great tapas bar in Chicago- 1492 Tapas Bar, and in Minneapolis- Solera. Fond memories, I am sure you will find a great tapas bar in San Sebastian if you can find one in Minneapolis.
You'll find an amazing spread of pintxos (PEEN-chohs) in every bar in the Old Town of San Sebastian. It's lots of fun to try something at several different bars--one of our favorites was Bar Goiz Argi. If the pintxos has a toothpick you keep it and the bartender will use them to keep track of how many you've eaten.
