Talk to me about Luxembourg

I'm not finding much about Luxembourg and am looking for thoughts and ideas of what to do for the one night I will be there. I'm planning to take a very early morning train from Paris to Luxembourg City and an afternoon/evening train out the next day. Will I have enough time to leave the city once I drop off my belongings at the hotel or should I plan to stay within city limits? Sights not to miss? Restaurant advice? Fill me in!

Of course, stay within the city!

Although pleasent enough, there's not that much in the way of "sights" within Luxembourg City. Probably most interesting is the actual layout of the town. It seems to grow organically out of a wide ravine and up the side of a cliff. There's some old fortifications as well lining the cliff. Attractive and enjoyable enough to walk around, but I wouldn't spend too much time here.

There is a hop-on, hop-off bus that goes around Luxembourg City.

Here's a link to the Luxembourg Tourist Office in London:

I haven't been to Luxemburg City since 2001, but I really enjoyed the self-guided walking tour of the historical sites around the city. The tourist office sent me tons of brochures before my trip. No restaurant advice from me, though: both times I've visited, I ate at the Pizza Hut in the center of town :)

Thank you for your suggestions! I'm wondering if there is enough to do in a day or if we can manage to squeeze in a train trip to Vianden which I understand is about one hour away. It would be nice to go to the cemetery where Patton is buried but I'm not sure if it is easy to get to from where the train station is.

We were there a couple of years ago and had a wonderful time! We stayed at a grand old hotel right across from the train station- it was stately, historic inexpensive and included a buffet breakfast -and bus ride into the main part of Luxembourg. We are walkers so it was fine! You can buy a pass for the buses - it was cheap!

Luxembourg was hopping when we were there- the sites and the was a concert in a square by a singer named Julie- and thousands of fans showed up (it was free).

Luxembourg has a palace and other sites...we enjoyed wandering around and looking at the squares.

We found this incredible toy shop off the main square.I know I will go back there some day.

Hope that helps.

Hi Dawn,

The American Military Cemetery (where Patton is buried) is really something else, and if you have the time and interest in WWII-related monuments, it's well worth a visit.

HERE is a link to a website with some information about it, although the "How to get here" part is a little ambiguous when using public transportation. Maybe an inquiry using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom would garner the information you'd need.

Vianden would also be a nice stop when coming into/out of Lux City if you have the time. It is a charming little town with a picturesque castle (that we weren't overly impressed with the inside of, but the outside views were nice).

Two more links for you to help plan:

I can't help with restaurants, as my cousin lives there and we usually eat at her place. But if you want, I could see if she'd have you over for dinner... :)

Agree with Angela, the American Cemetary is well worth a visit. General Patton is buried there. A city bus runs to and from the cemetary. Glad we did not miss it.

We took an open air bus tour of the city. Again, well worth taking the tour.

Now I know we want to head out of Luxembourg City! I'm almost wondering if we shouldn't have planned for a third day but we'll take what we can get. I'm very excited about Luxembourg now! Thanks for the suggestions, confirmations and the NY Times link. All are helpful!
